County Senior Section Trip to Mexico

Emily Edwards, a Senior Section member who took part in the County trip to Mexico had this to say about the trip:

“In August this year, I was lucky enough to participate in the Girlguiding Kent Weald County’s trip to Mexico. The purpose of the trip was to celebrate the senior section’s centenary and to take part in a programme at the Girlguiding World Centre in Mexico.

The trip lasted for 12 days and was crammed full of lots of exciting activities that gave us a taste of the Mexican culture. The first three days were spent exploring Mexico City and its surrounding areas, where the last eight days were spent in Cuernavaca at Our Cabana. For me, one of the most memorable adventures of the trip was when we climbed the Sun Pyramid in Teotihuacan, the view from the top was incredible! We also went for a colourful ride on the well-known floating gardens in Xochimilco.

For much of our trip we stayed at the Girlguiding World Centre in Mexico, Our Cabana, which is in Cuernavaca in Morelos. At Our Cabana, we participated in the world friendship programme which involved us getting to know guides from all over the world, including Mexico, Malawi and Argentina. We ventured outside of the cabana a few times, the most notable excursion being to the famous Mexican silver town of Taxco. Not only was there masses of beautiful silver jewellery on offer but the views of the town were breath-taking.

During our stay at Our Cabana, we also gave back to the local Mexican community by volunteering with the state orphanage. This involved us running activities for the orphans, including origami and friendship bracelet making, and then having the chance to play with them. It was a heart-warming and eye-widening situation being able to put smiles on less fortunate children’s faces.

All in all, the trip was a once in a lifetime opportunity that allowed 18 young girls to experience a different country in a safe and exciting way and the memories that we made in Mexico will stay with me for the rest of my life.”
