On Friday 27th October, 7 Kent Weald Walkers and 3 of our Guiding Friends from Surrey West travelled down the M4 to the Black Mountains in Wales. We stayed at a great Welsh cottage called Cadwgan which takes you back a few years. No mobile signal, no WIFI – what shall we do? Well, we had the most amazing weekend.
On Friday we discussed what walk we wanted to do on Saturday over a few glasses of wine. The good thing about Cadwgan is that there are great walks straight from the front door. We set off on Saturday after a filling breakfast up onto nearby ridge called Bal Mawr 607m which means big hill… the day started with some nice weather. But by the time we got to the top of the ridge the wind was whipping up and the fog came down so that the lovely view we were desiring disappeared! The wind was (excuse the pun) very windy, hats went on and head went down and some steady walking to get across the ridge. We headed to the Gwyne Fawr reservoir again didn’t really get the full effect due to the weather. But what a fabulous walk and we all felt on our return that we had deserved one our dinner and two a few glasses of wine.
The following day we woke up to sunshine so set off to walk to a hill fort. We sat and enjoyed the sunshine for lunch at this point we split some of returning using the Beacon Way some of us via another Crug Mawr 550m.
What a fabulous weekend, two days with very different weather but mostly just being in the company of true Guiding friends.
